TYPE-MOON Fes 10th Anniversary BD (Aniplex)

I’ve never written any real product reviews before but seeing as this is a recently released item and I don’t see any English reviews of it out yet, I decided to break that trend. Took out my new Sony DSC-RX100 (so much better than my old crappy phone camera) and took a bunch of photos with the help of Neco-Arc.

Blu-Ray box + Bonus Posters

Posters

Because I ordered mine with my friend Tsukikira to share shipping costs (from CDJapan), I have no idea what condition they shipped in (standard EMS I suppose?) but they did arrive in my hand with bubble wrap and plastic sleeves. I was actually quite happy that the posters arrived flat as-is instead of being rolled up in a tube. They even inserted a sheet of plain white cardboard in between the two posters to ensure they wouldn’t get folded ^_^

Truthfully, I wasn’t actually planning on buying this (it may be TYPE-MOON but it’s not a figure nor artbook nor game) until I saw the bonus A3 posters that would come with the pre-orders. I’m a huge Arcueid Brunestud fan and, having originally been designed back when Takeuchi Takashi was still fleshing out his art style, good artwork of her is pretty rare, not to mention posters. The action-yet-graceful pose of her in this poster instantly landed the BD set into my wishlist (though I’m not all that fond of the TYPE-MOON Fes version of Ryougi Shiki). I will admit though that the Saber+Aoko poster looks a lot flashier and poster-worthy due to their more vibrant colour scheme. Arcueid’s red eyes and blonde hair blend way too much into the orange-red background, and Shiki’s pink dress looks like part of the background from a distance >_< " I hope some future TYPE-MOON artbook will include a picture of each of the four heroines standalone instead of paired off like in the posters. Oh well, hopefully the Tsukihime remake will lead to an influx of new Arcueid merchandise (and hopefully Takeuchi fixes her hair in the new design >_<").
Interesting side note: Atlasia Sion Eltnam was the main character of the MELTY BLOOD series, and Caren Ortensia was the main character of Fate/hollow ataraxia, so technically they should be considered the fifth and sixth TYPE-MOON heroines. Heck, they even appear on the ALL AROUND TYPE-MOON merchandise from Comiket 72. Guess Nasu et al. don't consider them important/popular enough. I digress.
Both A3 bonus posters side-by-side. Arcueid Brunestud from Tsukihime and Ryougi Shiki from Kara no Kyoukai Saber from Fate/stay night and Aozaki Aoko from Mahou Tsukai no Yoru Neco-Arc admiring Arcueid and punching Saber (because she got more votes in the popularity contest than Arc) Blu-Ray Box The box containing the Blu-Ray discs and insert booklet was pretty nice and sturdy. Cardboard with a nice textured coating. On the front is printed some logo and text in gold lettering, and on the back is printed a nice picture of all four heroines combined (the same artwork from the two bonus posters but with a different background). The disc case had some nice design of chibis of various TYPE-MOON characters on the outside but was just a simple fold-out disc holder on the inside. There were four discs inside: disc 1 for day 1 of TYPE-MOON Fes., disc 2 for day 2 of TYPE-MOON Fes., disc 3 for a bonus Carnival Phantasm episode, and disc 4 for an original drama CD. Each of the discs had one of the four heroines as their cover art. The pamphlet was standard extra stuff: interviews, notes from the staff/event participants, short blurbs about each series, etc. The only interesting part was the signatures pages inside the front and back covers. I'm not so fond of Arcueid's pose here, nor that of any of the other heroines for that matter. The cover of the pamphlet. Same TYPE-MOON Fes artwork that you see as the cover of the pamphlet sold at the actual event http://myfigurecollection.net/item/120381. The cover folds out to show the full artwork (though folding it out and flattening it makes it harder to fold back in flatly). The inside of the cover contains a montage of chibi Fate/zero characters with notes and signatures (I assume from their seiyus). Didn't want to flatten the pamphlet too much so had Neco-Arc help me hold the flap for pictures Second/third page in had some notes from various TYPE-MOON staff (I think). Neco-Arc's heavy head was helpful here. Note from Nasu Kinoko (the mastermind behind the story lines of TYPE-MOON games/novels/etc.). I can't read Japanese (orz) so no translation, sorry. Top character rankings from the most recent official poll. Of course Saber gets first, followed by Ryougi Shiki and (surprisingly) Tohsaka Rin (I partially attribute this to loli-Rin in Fate/zero, but Rin has always been the stock tsundere with a huge fanbase). Arcueid Brunestud is disappointingly fourth (she should be first! *biased*). Fifth is Aozaki Aoko (Mahouyo just got released right before the poll), sixth is Matou Sakura (I attribute the boost in popularity entirely to loli-Sakura's appearance in Fate/zero). Seventh is Kuonji Alice (new character introduced in Mahouyo) and eighth is Kohaku (one of the maids from Tsukihime, maybe popular due to Melty Blood fans?). For some reason or another, they threw in Mahouyo's Robin in the bottom right corner. Looks like the bird is getting lots of love from TYPE-MOON fans (though a cat is fine too) Back cover contains chibis of various other TYPE-MOON characters (I see Fate/stay night, Fate/EXTRA, Tsukihime, and Mahou Tsukai no Hako) with their seiyu autographs/notes Simple back cover of pamphlet Overall Here's a picture of the entire set with the bonus A3 posters, plus a happy Neco-Arc. I just received it earlier today so haven't actually had a chance to watch any of the content yet, but after seeing the TYPE-MOON Fes opening video on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83nPn0IThJU (source http://nicotubeanime.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-5194.html), I'm looking forward to seeing it all. Especially the new Carnival Phantasm episode ^_^
As of the moment, I actually own all the TYPE-MOON games (limited edition boxed versions of Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, Fate/hollow ataraxia, all the MELTY BLOODs, and Mahou Tsukai no Yoru), but a few of them are still in the mail so no uber-picture with all the games together. Actually haven't played any of them yet except Tsukihime (I know, collecting all of this and haven't even played the games???), so one of these days I'll also have to do a TYPE-MOON visual novel marathon.
The entire TYPE-MOON Fes 10th Anniversary Blu-Ray Box set plus pre-order bonus posters This is my first real product review (I upload review-style photos of each item in my collection to MFC but they were all taken with my old crappy phone camera and with no related blog post) so please leave comments an feedback. Hope you enjoyed the review! UPDATE: Review of Day 1 disc:
Actually started tearing up when Track 8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0TaTc5dSMQ started playing and the Tsukihime remake PV started rolling right before the end (you can watch it online here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYlzBuPpgtE). Otherwise, didn't really understand much of what was going on due to it mostly just being various seiyus chatting. There was Sakura-fish and hand puppet Neco-Arc though! (which surprisingly is missing an MFC entry - info can be found at http://www.hlj.com/product/tpn22130). Kinda disappointed none of the actual TYPE-MOON staff made any guest appearances though ; / The vocalists of Kalafina, on the other hand, were truly amazing, completely blew away all the other artists that performed (LiSA, Faylan, LR harmony, etc.). Not only did they perform all 8 songs of Kara no Kyoukai back-to-back but also their Fate/Zero songs. It's one thing hearing perfect recordings from CD, but its completely another thing hearing the same flawless vocals being performed on-stage. Was worth the buy just to hear them sing.
UPDATE2: Review of Day 2 disc + Bonus CD:
Day 2 turned out to almost be exactly the same as Day 1, except with a few different people. Fate/zero's Rider seiyuu was baller, but otherwise, I did notice that the crowd didn't cheer as much elsewhere (probably since the returners had already seen most of it). I was pleasantly surprised at how the Tsukihime cast from Carnival Phantasm were significantly better artists than those from the Fate case. Also, once again, Kalafina proved to impress. The bonus disc contained two sections. The first section contained all PVs/short videos shown at TYPE-MOON Fes. This included the (awesome) opening, the full Carnival Phantasm episode, the Tsukihime remake announcement, and the likes without the crowd cheering sounds. There was a lot of dialog in the new Carnival Phantasm episode, so will probably have to rewatch it when it gets subbed to understand all the jokes. The second section contained a bunch of random videos from over the years, including game openings and some animated drama CD/bonus videos/etc from various locations. There were the various Fate/stay night and Fate/hollow ataraxia VN openings, a few bonus videos from Fate/EXTRA, a super long semi-animated conversation between Hibiki, Chikagi, Illya and Taiga, and a single Melty Blood PV. No Tsukihime/Melty Blood/other TYPE-MOON media openings ; / I was kinda hoping for the "Holy Grail" disc that contained all the TYPE-MOON-related media ever animated, but looks like I'll have to refer to the other "Holy Grail" http://straywolfnest.wordpress.com/the-great-holy-grail/ for that. Didn't listen through the Drama CD cause I don't understand Japanese well enough to get their jokes orz
~Keripo MyFigureCollection: http://myfigurecollection.net/blog/6303
